Epidemiologist right? You are looking at the problem from a public policy view. Dr Zwelling is looking at the problem from the view of clinical research (is the problem worth being funded) and patient treatment.
What is your opinion of the cost/benefit of basic research to unravel the genetic basis of individual cancers if that knowledge may be used to customize therapy for individuals with distinct cancer types of research methods? Would the potential patient population size need to meet some Read more [...]
Undergraduate education should be broadened. There are too many Lib Arts majors who cannot solve simple equations and too many science and engineering majors who cannot effectively communicate or give presentations.
I graduated with a chemical engineering degree and took additional Lib Arts classes to improve my writing and presentation skills and, after I graduated, I had very little problem finding a job. I think students should look at college education as a way to develop your communication skills Read more [...]
The southwest of France is magical. Did a driving trip throughout the southwest with my better half in 1998, spending time in Castelnaudary, Toulouse, and Carcassone, as well as Corde sur Ciele, Samatan, and Ceret, which is close to Spain and where Hemmingway spent time. One of the best holidays of my life, driving and eating disorder help, and eating, and eating, discovering walled ancient cities that were impressive, but whose walls couldn't protect the Cathars from Crusades of the angered Catholic Read more [...]
Actually, it was the racists response to MLK's words that made people rethink their own executive positions. That is why legislation such as the CRA keeps racism alive. The masses are not faced with the ugly reality of racism and aren't forced to rethink their positions. Obviously, governmental racism should be outlawed but private businesses should have the right to discriminate. The racist businesses will soon go bankrupt and the racists will be forced to rethink their positions. Allowing businesses Read more [...]
I have always taken a view on abortion that I have not seen. I am pro-choice. But I also take issue with those who don't or won't call it what it is - takchanges in my lifeg some level of human life. But we as a society will and do take human life for all sorts of reasons, including war - which often has collateral damage of civilians, as well as of course capitol punishment. By all means let women make a choice, but let's make sure that all of us know exactly what choice is being made, and not using Read more [...]
I'm happy NBC is taking a bath- they've held the Olympics hostage for an entire generation of Americans. Wonder why curling sees a spike in popularity around the games? It's the only event Americans have been allowed to watch as it plays out live on television. NBCs prime time 'highlight show' has all the suspense, dating without drama and freshnes of a two day old Sportscenter. I hope the next Olympics broadcaster will follow suit of other nations- don't overpay, then show the events live in their Read more [...]
Much of what you say is true but I think you should also stress the role of the parents. My (purely anecdotal I admit) observation is that Korean parents ADORE their children and are deeply engaged in their education. They expect their children to work related stress very hard (and sometimes too hard) but they lead by example and are working very hard themselves. Far too many western parents just say 'Go to your room and work;' while they are watching tv.
It's also fair to point out that Korean parents Read more [...]
Nick I don't disagree with you in principal, but I'm not sure anyone is claiming default being the solution. I don't want to speak for others but for me default seems inevitable.
The corrupt political elite in Greece used the bailout funds to stay afloat and has been doing nothing but deceive the EU and the ECB. They cut public speaking topics salaries, but the other laws passed have yet to be implemented. 20K people were laid off while 24K were hired. They said they will cut public funding to some Read more [...]
Iran is the nation-state equivalent of a suicide bomber willing to sacrifice its own life for a perverse, apocalyptic religious cause. The Cold War logic of mutual-assured destruction (MAD) worked because both parties, the U.S. and the Soviet Union, had a strong rational desire to stay alive. For heaven's sake, the Soviets were atheists - this life was all they had.
But for the fanatical mullahs of Iran, MAD stands for Mohammed-Assured Delight in the afterlife. This is not tenable and, as tired of Read more [...]
AARP i need a new jobs one organization responsible for the decline of the U.S. It's progressive push for policies that common sense tells you cannot work is the biggest of these groups and political leaders who push ponzi schemes onto American's who are gullible enough to believe that workers of the day can pay for the retirees of the day, even though we know the number of retirees are growing much quicker than the worker group.
AARP has refused to be honest with its membership for so many years, Read more [...]
